About Bill Bennett

Bill Bennett is a Charlottesville sculptor born in 1948 in Glen Ridge, NJ. He began his sculpture practice at Bucknell University where he studied under William Lasansky. He earned an MFA in Sculpture from Indiana University where his thesis project was a series of carvings into the wall and floor areas of an abandoned limestone quarry. In 1975, he moved to upstate NY near Syracuse and began work on an architecturally scaled stone project in an abandoned portion of a quarry in Jamesville, NY. This work was supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
In 1979, he moved to Charlottesville Virginia where he began a 42 year teaching career as an Associate Professor of sculpture at UVA. He retired in 2021 and continues to work in the Art Department as an Associate Professor Emeritus and a community scholar.
His sculpture is represented by Les Yeux du Monde Gallery (@lydmgallery), Charlottesville, VA. A new interactive work titled “Back to Back: Hands to Earth” will be installed on the grounds of Les Yeux du Monde gallery in a show, which will open to the public September 13, 2024.
Bennett will be exhibiting alongside painter Carol Barber within “Curator’s Choice”, a two-person exhibition in the Dové Gallery from September 6 – 27, 2024. Bennett and Barber were selected and paired by Executive Director & Chief Curator Kristen Chiacchia from a competitive pool of artists from last year’s Teeny Tiny Trifecta 6.
